Read more(1882-1967) Russian architect that descended from Zakharov family that owned brick factories on Izhora river. The life of Alexey Alexandrovich was split in 2 parts – he was born in St. Petersburg and got his education here. Though the period of his work in St. Petersburg was only about 5 years, he had erected (and rebuilt) more than a dozen buildings. His main architectural style was Art Noveau. However in this category you will find other styles like eclecticism and Russian revival style.
About a year before World War I Alexey Alexandrovich went to England and later to America in order to study new building technologies. Because of WWI (and the revolution that happened in Russia later – who knows, how he would have been treated by Soviets due to his previous hi-so origin) he decided to settle down in the USA. At first he had lived in New York and later he moved to Chicago. The architect did his best to stay in touch with motherland: from time to time his articles on American architecture were being published in Soviet journals and he did his correspondence with relatives that lived in Russia. The will of A.A. Zakharov to be buried in Ust-Izhora (St. Petersburg) was fulfilled.
